Introduction to the German Health System at IINR: Global Healthcare Exposure for Nursing Students
Understanding Global Healthcare Through the Introduction to the German Health System at IINR
The session on ‘Introduction to the German Health System’ provided students with a detailed understanding of how healthcare in Germany is structured, funded, and governed. The resource person, Prof. Dr. Diana zu Hohenlohe, delivered an insightful presentation explaining the historical origin of the system, highlighting how Germany established the world’s earliest national social insurance model under the Bismarck reforms of the late 19th century. The lecture covered Germany’s demographic trends, including its aging population, regional variations in life expectancy, and the overall impact of these demographic shifts on healthcare demand. Participants were introduced to the dual health insurance system, consisting of Statutory Health Insurance (SHI) and Private Health Insurance (PHI). The session further explained the
principles of solidarity, subsidiarity, and self-governance that guide the structure of healthcare delivery in Germany. The resource person elaborated on SHI contribution mechanisms, coverage policies, family insurance, and fund regulations. Students also learned about PHI’s premium structure, eligibility criteria, and supplementary insurance models. The talk included a comprehensive overview of the Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) system, introduced in 1995, and its role in supporting elderly citizens and individuals requiring long-term assistance. The session was highly educational, interactive, and relevant for students aspiring for global healthcare exposure. It strengthened Indo–German cooperation and broadened students’ understanding of international health systems.
